What to Look for in a Rehab Program

Road to Successful Recovery - Non 12 Step Rehab Programs Once someone has made the decision to get rehabilitation help, finding the right center cannot be understated in importance. There are many different types of rehab programs, and we feel that some are better than others, and a few may actually be very damaging.

First and foremost, we support drug-free rehabilitation programs. The trend of putting people on drugs and calling that treatment for addiction is disturbing. There are only very few extreme cases where something like this would be necessary. The rest of the time, which applies to the vast majority of people, a program that does not prescribe more drugs to addicts is what is really needed.

Prescription drugs are the fastest-rising category of substance abuse in America, so why would anyone think that they would help someone recover? Most non-12-step recovery programs do not give drugs to addicts and call that rehabilitation.

Length of Treatment

Addiction doesn't usually happen in just one month, let alone overnight. Therefore, what makes it seem possible that someone can recover in just one month? Of course it does happen sometimes, about as often as people completely quit on their own with no form of treatment, which is also documented as a form of recovery. However, what is often required for many people is a longer-term rehabilitation program. This could be 2-6 months, or more, depending on the success and method of treatment used in association with the willingness and ability of the individual. It is also vital as part of the continuum of care to have a good aftercare plan and support system in place. This doesn't have to be outpatient treatment or meetings, but instead should be unique to the individual's circumstances, environment, likes and dislikes. There is no set period of time that is the "magic bullet" for recovery, but there is a time when someone crosses over into the recovered category and doesn't require further treatment or counseling, which can be different for everyone.

Cost of Rehab Programs

It's no secret that drug rehabilitation centers aren't cheap. While there are facilities out there that can make it much more affordable and possibly even free, it is important not to necessarily rule something out just because of "sticker shock." When related to other purchases and events in life, the price tag of a successful long-term drug rehab program could be comparable. These things could include a new car, a year away at college, attorney's fees, etc. Most people don't second-guess the money spent on those items because they are convinced they need them. Such should be the case when finding the right rehabilitation program, and if it is not possible then having a second or third choice lined up.
