Learn the Truth About Addiction
Many of us were led to
believe that we will be hopelessly fighting addiction for the rest of our lives
and believed that we had an incurable disease, possibly passed down through our
genes.
Did you know that addiction was voted in as a disease, along with most other mental disorders, and that there is not a single scientific study, blood or DNA test that has actually proven these to be true? That's good news for those of us looking for answers, because it rules out a false reasoning.
The truth is that there are many factors involved with addiction, and while some people may be more susceptible to becoming dependent on different drugs or alcohol, somebody or someone else is never the reason people become addicted - which means that ultimately addicts can be in control over themselves and their futures with the right help. God didn't decide someone was going to be an addict and damn them to that lifestyle. Circumstances and choices in life brought that on, and therefore it can be undone - permanently! If someone continues to believe they are a victim then they will most likely stay that way - the effect of others instead of being in control of themselves.
Are You Tired of Living in the Past?
Most recovery programs today keep people re-living the past. This can be extremely damaging because it continues to remind them of all of the previous troubles, losses and misfortunes of life up until now. The secret behind ending addiction falls in the ability to successfully confront the past and leave it there so that you can move forward in life. Continually revisiting it won't allow you to do that because it keeps stirring it up. This is one reason why the relapse rate immediately following meetings is so high. You go and talk about your problems and listen to everyone else's miseries and it keeps bringing you down. For meetings to be successful they have to focus on the positives in life and the future, offering solutions and not more problems.
